There are an almost infinite number of waterproofing products for an equal number of applications.

A waterproof membrane is a layer of material applied over a surface which does not allow water to pass though. This water-tight coating can be made of any number of materials some of which are:

​

• Flexible polyurethane – one of the most common types in today's market. Typically easier to apply and cheaper than alternatives, its warranty life from new should be around 10 years. These materials are used in almost any application from rooftops to under-tile membranes in bathrooms

​​

• Acrylics and Epoxy barriers – A very common membrane. A one or two component membranes in a variety of forms and applications.

​​

• Bitumen-based membranes and torch-on – a bitumen-based membrane which can be rolled or spray applied, and sheet-type torched-on. Bitumen based products have been used in waterproofing for many decades, and its incompatibility with other

​​

• more modern materials, and better alternatives have made this material a lesser-used option.

​​

• Thermoplastics and PVCs – a single sheet-type membrane applied and ‘welded’ together. High traffic-ability, easy to repair and high temperature resistance.

​​

• Steels, leads and plastics – often used in older buildings for shower trays, rooftop flashing, window surrounds, etc

​​
